Editorial Policy
SafeBowl publishes 528+ articles on dog safety covering foods, plants, household items, and seasonal hazards. Every article follows a consistent research and review process to ensure the information we provide is accurate, clear, and trustworthy.
How Articles Are Researched
Each article is researched using authoritative veterinary databases and published studies. Our primary sources include:
- ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center— including the Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants Database, one of the most comprehensive references for pet toxicity data
- Pet Poison Helpline— clinical resources and published case information on common pet poisonings
- Merck Veterinary Manual— peer-reviewed veterinary reference covering toxicology, clinical signs, and treatment protocols
- Published veterinary studies— peer-reviewed research from veterinary journals where available
We cross-reference multiple sources before publishing any article. Where sources disagree, we err on the side of caution and note the discrepancy.
How Safety Verdicts Are Assigned
Every item in our database receives one of four safety verdicts:
No known toxicity to dogs. Generally safe in reasonable quantities, though individual sensitivities may vary.
Safe in small amounts or with preparation, but may cause issues in larger quantities or for dogs with certain conditions.
Contains substances known to be harmful to dogs. Ingestion may cause symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal upset to organ damage.
Highly toxic. Ingestion can cause severe symptoms or be life-threatening. Immediate veterinary attention is required.
Verdicts are based on documented toxicity data, the severity of potential symptoms, typical ingestion scenarios, and a dog's likely exposure. We consider factors such as the toxic dose relative to body weight and the speed of symptom onset.
Review and Updates
Articles are regularly reviewed and updated as new veterinary research becomes available. When a source updates its guidance, we revise our content accordingly. Each article displays a last-updated date so readers can see how recent the information is.
Corrections
If you believe any of our content is inaccurate or incomplete, we encourage you to contact us. We take corrections seriously and will review your feedback against our editorial sources. Veterinary professionals are especially welcome to contribute their expertise.
