Introduction
SafeBowl ("we", "our", "the app") is a dog food safety scanner that uses AI to identify whether foods, plants, and ingredients are safe for your dog. This privacy policy explains what data the app collects, how it is used, and your rights.

Data We Do NOT Collect
- No email address, phone number, or real name
- No advertising identifier (IDFA)
- No cross-app tracking
- No browsing history
- No contacts, calendar, or health data
- No microphone or Bluetooth data
- No analytics or telemetry data
How Your Data Is Used
Safety scanning — Photos you take or select are sent to our server, which forwards them to Anthropic's Claude AI for analysis. The image and your pet's basic profile (name, weight, breed) are included so the AI can personalise its safety assessment. We do not store your images on our servers.
Device authentication — Your device's vendor identifier (a UUID unique to this app on your device, reset if you delete the app) is sent to our server to issue anonymous access tokens. No account or login is required.
Emergency vet locator — When you use the vet finder, your location is used on-device via Apple Maps to search for nearby veterinary clinics. Your location is sent to Apple's mapping service, not to our servers.
Subscriptions — Purchase transactions are handled by Apple's StoreKit and RevenueCat. We receive a confirmation of your subscription status but no payment details.
Local features — Search, pet profiles, incident logs, and symptom tracking all operate entirely on your device. None of this data leaves your phone unless you explicitly share it using the iOS share sheet.

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
Data Storage and Security
- All personal data (pets, incidents, preferences) is stored on your device only using iOS SwiftData with standard file protection.
- Authentication tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain with protection that requires the device to be unlocked.
- All network requests use HTTPS/TLS encryption.
- We do not operate a user database. Your device authenticates anonymously.
Data Retention
- On-device data: Persists until you delete the app or clear it manually within the app.
- Server-side: We do not store images or scan results on our servers. Images are processed in real-time and discarded.
- Authentication tokens: JWT tokens expire automatically. Device registration records on our proxy server contain only your device vendor ID (an anonymous UUID).
Your Rights
Delete Your Data
Since SafeBowl does not require an account, your data can be deleted by:
- Deleting the app — Removes all on-device data (pets, scans, incidents, preferences, Keychain tokens).
- Reinstalling the app — Generates a new device identifier, making your previous server-side registration record orphaned and unlinkable.
Opt Out of Data Collection
- Camera: Deny camera permission in iOS Settings. You can still scan photos from your library.
- Photo library: Deny photo library permission. You can still use the camera.
- Location: Deny location permission. The vet finder will not function, but all other features remain available.
Legal Basis and Compliance
SafeBowl processes data on the basis of legitimate interest (providing the service you have requested) and, where applicable, your consent. We comply with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
As a UK-based service, we ensure that any international data transfers (such as sending images to Anthropic's AI service for processing) are protected by appropriate safeguards as required by UK data protection law.
Children's Privacy
SafeBowl is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app does not require any personal information to function beyond optional pet details.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via an in-app notice. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
